Most conversations about high-performance design begin with energy use, carbon, or certifications. Those things matter — but they are not why most clients choose a high-performance home, and they are not why we design them.
We design high-performance homes because of what they feel like to live in. Because of how quiet they are. How even the temperature is. How comfortable you feel when it is 10°F outside and you are sitting in shorts and a T-shirt without touching the thermostat. Because of how durable they are, how low-maintenance, how acoustically calm, how healthy the air is.
Sustainability is what you get as a consequence of building well — not the reason to do it. We design homes that are comfortable, resilient, and built to last. The energy and environmental benefits follow naturally from that.
This distinction matters because it changes how the conversation starts. Instead of beginning with a certification target or an energy standard, we begin with what you want your home to feel like — and what you want it to do for your family over the next 30 years.
From there, we work intelligently through the options. Some high-performance decisions cost nothing and deliver tremendous benefit. Others require real investment. Knowing the difference — and helping you make those decisions with clarity — is where our expertise lives.
The result is a home that performs well because it was designed that way from the beginning — not because a checklist was completed at the end.
What a high-performance home
actually feels like.
Clients who move into a well-built high-performance home often say the same things. The experience surprises them — not because the technology is impressive, but because the home simply feels different in ways they didn't expect.
These are not marketing claims. They are descriptions of what good envelope design, controlled ventilation, and thermal mass actually produce in daily life.
No hot spots. No cold spots. No drafts near windows in January. The temperature is consistent from room to room and floor to floor — something most homes never achieve.
A well-insulated, airtight envelope dramatically reduces sound transmission from outside. Clients often describe the interior as calm — partly because of the acoustics, and partly because the heating and cooling system doesn't have to work as hard or run as often.
Because the envelope holds heat so effectively, the thermostat can often be set lower in winter and higher in summer than in a standard home — while still feeling more comfortable. Operating costs drop. The home becomes more temperate, not just more efficient.

We always start with the low-hanging fruit — the decisions that cost little or nothing but deliver significant performance benefit. Then we work up the curve, stopping where the investment makes sense given your goals, your budget, and the specific conditions of your site and climate.

Orientation, window placement, shading geometry, and massing decisions can dramatically improve performance without adding cost. These are the decisions that need to happen first — before anything is drawn in detail. When performance is added late in the design process, it usually becomes more expensive and less elegant. We address these fundamentals before they become expensive to change.
Continuous insulation, high-performance windows, and air sealing typically deliver the most significant comfort and durability improvements per dollar spent. We evaluate these against your budget and goals early — not as afterthoughts.
Based on your goals, budget, site, and climate, we help you determine where on the performance spectrum to land. This is a deliberate conversation — not a default. Some projects call for Pretty Good House principles. Others call for Energy Star Next Gen or full Passive House rigor.
High-performance design only delivers its benefits if it is built correctly. We prepare construction documents that anticipate the sequencing, coordination, and trade-specific details that high-performance assemblies require — so the contractor can execute with confidence rather than improvise under pressure.
Why construction knowledge
matters here more than anywhere.
High-performance design is not just an architectural decision. It is a construction coordination challenge. Every assembly — every air barrier connection, every insulation transition, every penetration through the envelope — has to be thought through in sequence: who installs it, when, in what order, and how the next trade works around it.
When that coordination breaks down, the contractor improvises. Sometimes the improvisation is fine. Often it compromises the very performance the design was trying to achieve.
Jesse's background in construction means he thinks through these sequences before the drawings leave the office — not after the contractor calls with a question from the field.
A good contractor partner is essential on high-performance projects — and the best ones want the conversation. They have preferences about methods and sequencing that come from real field experience. We actively engage those preferences rather than dictating from the drawings. If a contractor wants to achieve the air barrier target a different way than we specified, and it meets the performance goal, we'll work with their method.
What matters is the outcome: an envelope that performs as designed, installed correctly, by trades who understood what they were doing and why.
That level of coordination requires good drawings, good communication, and an architect who understands the construction sequence well enough to have a productive conversation with every trade involved.
What we
don't pursue.
We typically do not pursue LEED certification for residential work. Not because the goals are wrong — but because our residential projects are usually better served by performance-oriented frameworks that focus directly on comfort, durability, energy use, indoor air quality, and verified building performance. It is possible to achieve a high LEED score without building a particularly comfortable or durable home, and that disconnect is where we part ways with the approach.
Standards like Pretty Good House, Energy Star Next Gen, and Passive House are oriented around actual performance outcomes — verified through testing and measurement rather than through credits accumulated on a scorecard. Those are the frameworks we work within.
We also don't pursue high performance as a marketing position. We pursue it because it produces better homes — and because clients who live in them consistently describe a quality of life that standard construction simply doesn't deliver.
What this looks like
in a real project.
In the Sundial House — a Marshall Fire rebuild in Superior, Colorado — these priorities came together through a complete high-performance strategy calibrated to the family's specific goals: healthy indoor air for family members with allergies, fire resilience, comfort, and long-term energy performance.
The design is Net Zero Energy Ready, built to Energy Star Next Gen standards, with exterior continuous insulation eliminating thermal bridging, a controlled ventilation system managing both fresh air and indoor humidity, and passive solar geometry calibrated precisely to the south-facing site. The home is all-electric and solar-ready — designed to support a future array when the family is ready.
The result is a 2,967 sf home that performs — thermally, acoustically, and for indoor air quality — well beyond what its modest footprint suggests.
